چکیده

We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster, and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. From weak shear measurements alone, we generate a non-parametric mass reconstruction, which shows significant substructure corresponding to groups of galaxies within the cluster. Additionally, our galaxy-galaxy flexion signal demonstrates that the cluster galaxies can be well-fit by a singular isothermal sphere model with a characteristic velocity dispersion of σv = 295 ± 40 km/s. We identify a major, distinct dark matter clump, offset by 40h−1kpc from the central cluster members, which was not apparent from shear measurements alone. This secondary clump is present in a parametric mass reconstruction using flexion data alone, and its existence is suggested in a non-parametric reconstruction of the cluster using a combination of strong and weak lensing. As found in previous studies, the mass profile obtained by combining weak and strong lensing data shows a much steeper profile than that obtained from only weak lensing data. Multipole Formulae for Gravitational Lensing Shear and Flexion

The gravitational lensing equations for convergence, potential, shear, and flexion are simple in polar coordinates and separate under a multipole expansion once the shear and flexion spinors are rotated into a “tangential” basis. We use this to investigate whether the useful monopole aperture-mass shear formulae generalize to all multipoles and to flexions. We re-derive the result of Schneider ...

Weak gravitational shear and flexion with polar shapelets

We derive expressions, in terms of ‘polar shapelets’, for the image distortion operations associated with weak gravitational lensing. Shear causes galaxy shapes to become elongated, and is sensitive to the second derivative of the projected gravitational potential along their line of sight; flexion bends galaxy shapes into arcs, and is sensitive to the third derivative. Polar shapelets provide ...

Delensing Gravitational Wave Standard Sirens with Shear and Flexion Maps

Supermassive black hole binary systems (SMBHB) are standard sirens – the gravitational wave analogue of standard candles – and if discovered by gravitational wave detectors, they could be used as precise distance indicators. Unfortunately, gravitational lensing will randomly magnify SMBHB signals, seriously degrading any distance measurements. Using a weak lensing map of the SMBHB line of sight...

Gravitational Flexion by Elliptical Dark Matter Haloes

We present equations for the gravitational lensing flexion expected for an elliptical lens mass distribution. These can be reduced to one-dimensional finite integrals, thus saving significant computing time over a full two-dimensional calculation. We estimate constraints on galaxy halo ellipticities for a range of potential future surveys, finding that the constraints from the two different typ...
